The future of IMISCOE
“… scientific understanding and progress can only be made through comparative research and the exchange of methodologies and results...IMISCOE is living evidence of the fact that methodological nationalism is becoming an obsolete tradition. Migration is an international - if not a global - issue following the globalisation of our economies...',
So were the opening words of the January 2008 IMISCOE Board of Directors meeting concerning the future of the Network. The speech was made by the the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam >>>
Creating an integrated European research area
Not only is the future of IMISCOE being discussed among its boards, but a European level debate has also been launched concerning prospects for the Networks of Excellence (NoE) overall. To this end, a group of 56 of such networks, representing over 13,000 European researchers developed an opinion paper that was presented to the European Commission during the Open Forum that took place on 20 November 2007 in Brussels. The purpose of this event was to highlight to the European Commission and to other stakeholders how NoEs can play a key role in the future of European Research Area and how, for this reason, NoEs merit a prolonged existence. IMISCOE participates in new initiative in online publishing in the social sciences
Open Access Publishing in European Networks (OAPEN) is an international consortium of university presses from Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Firenze, Goettingen, Lyon and Manchester that will create an online publication model for academic books in the humanities and social sciences. This model should improve the spread of scholarly research and is based on the publication model that has already been developed for IMISCOE by Amsterdam University Press (AUP). This model is characterised by three methods of dissemination: a digital academic repository, a print-on-demand service and traditional publishing. IMISCOE’s involvement in this initiative will provide the opportunity to open its publication programme to other European languages other than English. Thie IMISCOE Newsletter will keep you up to date on this intiative.
NEW PUBLICATIONS
Towards a Better Understanding of Human Smuggling, Friedrich Heckmann (2007), IMISCOE Policy Brief No 5. Amsterdam: IMISCOE
IMISCOE migration researchers have recently made new efforts to better understand the phenomenon of human smuggling. This policy brief will report on the unique results of a recent study that enabled IMISCOE researchers to gain more insight into trends in human smuggling and smuggling processes. It will present key factors that influence the dramatically increasing death toll among smuggled migrants and how human smuggling is combated.
Migration Policymaking in Germany: Between National Reluctance and Local Pragmatism, Maren Borkert and Wolfgang Bosswick, IMISCOE Working Paper No. 20.
' Germany’s long-lasting view of itself as a non-immigration country resulted in the absence of a comprehensive national migration policy up till the new millennium... In reality, throughout its history, Germany has been a typical immigration country...This paper reveals the multitude of policymaking arenas that exist at different levels of society and offers new insight into policymaking and outputs.’
- Prof. Giovanna Zincone, FIERI, Italy
This working paper illustrates 50 years of migration towards Germany, focusing particularly on processes of migration policymaking at different institutional levels of governance. The study contributes to the literature by addressing the significant gap between migration policymaking and empirical evidence.

Secularism or Democracy? Associational Governance of Religious Diversity
Veit Bader
This volume offers an innovative response to today’s ever-pressing problems concerning the governance of religious diversity >>>
‘In this important book, Veit Bader offers an anti-perfectionist defence of religious diversity and its associational governance. His bold and courageous approach to these issues is based on a concept of minimal morality that is coupled with a commitment to maximum institutional pluralism. Secularism or Democracy puts at centre-stage the urgent need to revisit the relationship between religion and politics if we are to live together peacefully and respectfully in our diverse societies.’
- Ayelet Shachar, Leah Kaplan Visiting Professor of Law
Stanford Law School, Stanford, California
