 NETWORK NEWS

IN MEMORIAM PROF. DR. MARIA IOANNIS BAGANHA
With great sadness we announce that on Sunday morning June 28, 2009 Maria Baganha passed away. Maria Baganha has been a leading figure in the field of migration studies: within the University of Coimbra where she established and headed a special unit in the field; in Portugal as a whole, where she played a crucial role in initiating coordinated action of researchers and policymakers in the field; and in Europe, particularly through her central role within IMISCOE. Within IMISCOE Maria Baganha has had a crucial place and she has carried its development right from the beginning. IMISCOE owes a lot to Maria Baganha. Firstly, because of her outstanding scientific and organisational contributions, but we will also miss her irreplaceable character and ways of doing things: energetic, cheerfully, with a good feeling for agreeable forms of irony including self-relativation, combined with sharp analysis of what quality is.
A TRIBUTE TO MARIA BAGANHA

PORTAL FOR POLICYMAKING
The Network Office has launched a Portal for Policymaking. With this portal we aim to give easy access to all concrete output of IMISCOE, specifically for policy makers. The portal provides abstracts and links to all IMISCOE publications and refers you to databases with more background information and contact details of migration experts. Visitors can also leave a request that will be send to the Network Office.

THE IMISCOE RESEARCH NETWORK (IMISCOE RN)
Since 1 April 2009 the future incarnation of IMISCOE, the IMISCOE Research Network has been established. This network will co-exist with the IMISCOE Network of Excellence until 31 March 2010, after which the independent network will begin operations in full swing. Up to date 17 of the 23 original IMISCOE partners have committed as members of the future IMISCOE RN. We are furthermore pleased to announce that 3 new members have joined IMISCOE RN: MiReKoc in Istanbul, the Malmö Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare (MIM) and the Instituto Universitario de Estudios sobre Migraciones de la Universidad Pontificia Comillas de Madrid IEM-Comillas). We expect to extend our network in the coming period with 4 more new members as well as most of the remaining original members of the IMISCOE Network of Excellence.

 SIXTH ANNUAL IMISCOE CONFERENCE

9-11 September 2009 IMISCOE will organise its Sixth Annual Conference around the themes Sustainable diversity, migration and social cohesion. As a result of globalization processes these issues are anticipated to become increasingly important for future political agendas in modern welfare societies. This year's event is hosted by IMISCOE parner CEIFO in Stockholm and is jointly organised with the SUS.DIV Network of Excellence. The objective is to bridge differences of perspectives that each network focuses specifically on and thus shed light upon questions of common interest. This conference is mainly organised for members of the two networks. However, we also intend to have an open call for papers with the aim to attract top scholars from North America, Australia, Japan and some other important countries of immigration. Plenary lectures and keynote speeches will be open to a wider audience. If space permits some of the conference workshops will also be open to researchers not formally members of the networks.

IMISCOE BOOKS

Citizenship in the Arab World. Kin, Religion and Nation-State, (2009) Gianluca P. parolinParolin, IMISCOE Research Series, Amsterdam: IMISCOE The book is the fruit of five years of on-site research on citizenship in the Arab world. It takes a broad legal perspective to the multifaceted reality of nationality and citizenship. The methodology employed builds on the interdisciplinary approach of comparative legal studies, and brings in theories, concepts and insights from anthropology, political science, Arab and Islamic studies, linguistics and sociology. The work relies on a broad range of Western and Arab references, and all sources and documents were directly accessed in their original languages; this is particularly relevant for Arab legislation.

L'imaginaire du complot. Discours d'extrême droite en France et aux Etats-Unis, jamin(2009), Jérôme Jamin, IMISCOE Dissertation Series, Amsterdam: IMISCOE This book explores the importance of conspiracy rhetoric within populist and far right speeches in Europe and the United States. It shows how a “New World Order” plot give to populist and far right parties an opportunity to develop a rhetoric based on the rescue of democracy despite their obvious rejection of the values and principles which set up democracy.

'My Name Is Not Natasha' How Albanian Women in France Use Trafficking to daviesOvercome Social Exclusion (1998-2001), (2009) John Davies, IMISCOE Dissertation Series, Amsterdam: IMISCOE This book challenges every common presumption that exists about the trafficking of women for the sex trade. It is a detailed account of an entire population of trafficked Albanian women whose varied experiences, including selling sex on the streets of France, clearly demonstrate how much the present discourse about trafficked women is misplaced and inadequate. The book clearly shows how peripheral involvement in sex work was to the real agenda of the women involved. Most of the women described in this book were not making economic decisions to escape desperate poverty nor were they the uneducated naïve entrapped into sexual slavery. The women’s success in transiting trafficking to achieve their own goals without the assistance of any outside agency is a testimony to their resilience and resolve.

Sri Lankan Housemaids in Lebanon. A Case of 'Symbolic Violence' and 'Emourkabelveryday Forms of Resistance', (2009) Nayla Moukarbel, IMISCOE Dissertation Series, Amsterdam: IMISCOE Unraveled in this book are the real dynamics at stake in the Madame/housemaid relationship. While cases of extreme physical abuse by the Lebanese women who hire housemaids – Madames – are an exception, what has become normalised are more insidious patterns of domination used to control each and every aspect of their employees’ lives. For their part, Sri Lankan housemaids are not merely passive victims. Away from direct provocation and first-hand repercussions, they try to deflect what Pierre Bourdieu has called ‘symbolic violence’. These attempts at ‘everyday forms of resistance’, as defined by James Scott, can help loosen their employers’ grip.

Statistics and Reality. Concepts and Measurements of Migration in Europe, fassman et al(2009) Heinz Fassmann, Ursula Reeger, Wiebke Sievers, IMISCOE Reports Series, Amsterdam: IMISCOE In the last decade, there has been a distinct trend towards a worldwide harmonisation of migration statistics, chiefly pushed by international bodies and organisations that need comparative data. Statistics and Reality shows that these attempts have as yet not been very successful. It provides an accessible account of the history of migration measurement in Europe and analyses the current conceptualisations of migration and data gathering procedures in twelve European countries in the context of their migration histories. Based on this analysis, the authors provide a critical insight into the migrant stocks and flows in their countries.

 POLICY BRIEFS

adobeResearch-Policy Dialogues on Migration and Integration in Europe, (2009) Policy brief 15: Rinus Penninx and Peter Scholten, Amsterdam: IMISCOE The research-policy dialogues in the domains of migration and integration are increasingly contested. Policymakers often complain about the lack of clear scientific evidence upon which to base their policy decisions. Meanwhile, researchers seem increasingly disenchanted with the impact of their studies and the difficulties of delivering ‘unwelcome messages’. This policy brief presents different ways research-policy dialogues have previously been organised and help inform policymakers and researchers in their work to strengthen the research-policy nexus.

WORKING PAPERS

adobe Caught between Scylla and Charybdis? Changing orientations of migrant organisations in the era of national states, from 1880 onwards (2009), WP 26, Leo Lucassen and Rinus Penninx, Amsterdam: IMISCOE This paper presents the main result of an ambitious research project on the dynamics of German, Polish and Turkish migrant organisations in the Netherlands over a period spanning more than a century. The authors convincingly argue that, in order to understand the present state of migrant organisations, one has to go back to their genesis. The paper offers a clear theoretical framework combining micro-, macro-, and meso-dimensions and presents an impressive amount of empirical data. Policymakers would be well inspired to read this piece, particularly when considering policies in the area of migrant organisations. The paper also serves as encouragement to continue developing research on migrant organisations.

adobeProjections of urban development (2009), WP 25, Charles Westin and Niklas Westin, Amsterdam: IMISCOE Charles Westin and Niklas Westin offer an overview of world population development, the main trends in global urbanisation and the effects of fast-growing mega-cities that lack adequate environmental infrastructure and political stability. Their analysis is based mainly on UN and World Bank statistics and specific trend projections. The authors pinpoint where urban growth could be exceptionally high and which problems would be specifically related to such expansion. In many cities, this means the rise of slums, squatters and favelas, which, in turn, are related to worldwide environmental risks, global warming and flooding, crime, corruption, and health and urban terrorism.
