The quality of the multicultural democracy in Amsterdam and Berlin
Date: March 2007
In this policy workshop the following policy questions were discussed: What role do immigrant organisations play in the integration process? What is the role of (German/Dutch) welfare organizations in the implementation of the integration policies? And how can policy makers stimulate the possible integrative function of welfare organisations? What do the answers on the questions raised above mean for the need for a specific minority policy versus a more general policy?
Explicit goal of this event was an exchange of ideas and experiences between policymakers and researchers, and between Amsterdam and Berlin. Therefore input and preparations were needed from all participants. The organizing team prepared papers containing policy relevant conclusions of the research. The policymakers were asked to provide brief statements about the most important issues they are facing.
To make the workshop more rewarding for the Amsterdam policymakers, site visits were organised. The conference had the character of a working meeting. The sessions were closed and invitations were therefore limited (max.30 participants) and targeted.
