IMISCOE PHD CONFERENCE

IMISCOE PhD Winter School, Lisbon, Portugal - 23 – 26 February 2010, PhD students in the field of migration studies are invited to apply to the IMISCOE PhD Winter School. The Winter School will be hosted by the Centro de Estudos Geográficos (CEG) of the University of Lisbon and the Centro de Estudos de Sociologia (CESNOVA) of the Nova University of Lisbon. The organisers aim to increase the research competence of PhD students in the domain of migration analysis by bridging theory and practice. The Winter School will explore novel methods of research such as comparative analysis, specific applications of ethnographic approaches and fieldwork methods comprising direct observation and analysis grids, cartographic and GIS applications. It will also provide focused analysis of urban places that have been created and appropriated through joint action by immigrants, their offspring and the indigenous population. For more information on the programme and the content of the various workshops and lectures please consult the Call for Participation.

IMISCOE PHD TRAINING PROGRAMME

IMISCOE is currently building a coherent training programme in the fields of migration, integration and social cohesion for PhD students, with the added aim of developing targeted training programmes for policymakers and practioners in the field.

For this purpose the IMISCOE training committee has made an inventory of all major master's and PhD programmes in Europe dealing with international migration. Based on the outcomes of this inventory a coherent programme will be offered that compiles the sthrenghts of these various programmes and tackles any wekanesses and gaps that are identified.

IMISCOE CRASH COURSES

IMISCOE also wants to serve the needs of others, including IMISCOE and non-IMISCOE institutions interested in an intensive training programme to a group of PhD students and other early-stage researchers, or a broader circle of universities that have not yet joined the network but that are nonetheless interested in catching up with the latest in the field of international migration and integration. Such ‘crash courses’ last three to seven days, can be offered on site so that travel and accommodation expenses need only be taken care of for teaching staff, and are therefore relatively inexpensive. The details of the programme are determined in a mutual agreement.

24-29 April, 2008, first IMISCOE crash course in cooperation with the Lebanese Emigration Research Center (LERC) at Notre Dame University (NDU) >>>
