Luxembourg

Located at the heart of Europe and bordered by Belgium, Germany and France, Luxembourg is strategically located and easily accessible from anywhere.

Luxembourg is a multicultural and multilingual: over 150 different nationalities live here and 3 official languages (Luxembourgish, German, French) are spoken.

In the Grand Duchy, one of the founder states of the European Union, about 46% of the 571,000 inhabitants are foreign, not calculating those having a Luxembourgish citizenship with migratory background. This multicultural multi-ethnic ambience of day-to-day contact with people from around the world gives this small state an astonishingly cosmopolitan outlook – not least thanks to the European institutions, the financial centre and international students.

The Grand Duchy offers a multitude of fascinating landscapes spread over 5 regions with a rich cultural, historical, architectural, and industrial heritage – the castles in the richly forested north and the vineyards along the Mosel. Some attractions, such as the medieval city, are listed as UNESCO world heritage sites.

Luxembourg is a country of human dimensions: all sites and attractions are within easy reach: e.g. airport – city center: 7 km. Many locations are within walking distance from each other.

It is easy to get around in the capital (107,000 inhabitants) as the distances are short.

There is a vibrant nightlife scene around the fashionable bars of Hollerich, Grund and Clausen in the Capital, or in the “Rockhal” and the “Kulturfabrik” in Esch-sur-Alzette.

Furthermore, Luxembourg offers plenty of opportunities for sports, leisure activities as well as events: cinemas and climbing parks, mountain bike trails and an enormous cultural range – from jazz in the medieval city and contemporary art to theatre plays in every language or classical as well as world music.

The Grand Duchy represents not only the highest density of star restaurants throughout the world, it also offers a fabulous mix of cultures and flavours where the grand cuisines of Europe mingle with local products.

It is no surprise that Luxembourg ranks in the Top 20 of the most livable cities in the Global Liveable Cities Index (GLCI).

Esch-sur-Alzette

Cosmopolitan city with a lively past, Esch-sur-Alzette is well-known for its architectural charms (the architects Violet le Duc, Joseph Stübben, Gottfried Böhm and Peter Rice have worked here) and its large shopping facilities. The second largest town of the country lies at 17 km from the capital city and at 25 km from the airport. The City’s history and that of the adjacent areas can be traced back to more than 5.000 years and it owes its current importance is due to the surrounding iron ore.

A choice of cultural attractions awaits the visitors, for example the National Museum of the Resistance, the metallurgical factories, Berwart tower, monuments, architectural walks  in the city centre, Belvédère, park (Stübben), St. Joseph’s church, Grotto of Lourdes, City Hall, local theatre with programs meeting everyone’s taste, art galleries, and the music conservatory.

Esch-sur-Alzette offers numerous entertainment possibilities: popular festivities, discos, renowned restaurants and bars. The recreation centre at Galgenberg for instance offers a beautiful park, marked walking paths, rose-garden, waterfall and fountains, playgrounds, zoo and several sports facilities.

Belval

As the Luxembourg Times explains, “Belval in the south of Luxembourg is synonymous with a number of things: live music with its Rockhal venue, higher education with the university campus and leisure with the cinema and Belval Plaza shopping mall, among other things. But, it was not always the case and the site has gone through one of the most dramatic changes of any area in the Grand Duchy, from forest to natural spring site and later hosting a state-of-the-art steelworks. […] While new developments continue to appear at Belval the site has not lost touch with its industrial roots. At the heart of the development remains the iconic steelworks building, which is today used for historic tours and exhibitions.”

About the organizers

University of Luxembourg (UL)

In 2003, right at the heart of the European Union, the University of Luxembourg (UL) was founded. UL is a multilingual, international research university, for whom research on migration has always been a priority. Here at the UL, migration-related research benefits from the interplay of several factors: the geographical location of Luxembourg, the involvement of the UL in the University of the Greater Region, the multicultural campus-feel created by students from around 115 countries and researchers from about 20 countries, as well as our multilingual teaching together develop a climate of open-mindedness and cultural intelligence.

Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE)

FHSE conducts a wide range of research in the fields of humanities, behavioural sciences, education and social work, social sciences, geography and architecture to understand and shape change. Through its key research area “Migration and Inclusive Societies” (MIS), FHSE looks at representations of migration in culture, history and literature, it addresses key issues such as migration and identity, multilingualism, education with respect to health and behaviour, social inequalities, and sustainable development to contribute to inclusive, open and resilient societies.

Migration and Inclusive Societies (MIS)

The Key Research Area “Migration and Inclusive Societies” (MIS) at the University of Luxembourg conducts innovative research, teaching and outreach in migration studies with the aim of promoting inclusive societies. By fostering disciplinary and methodological diversity, MIS strives to find the most appropriate ways to engage scientifically with the complexity of migration processes and of inclusion. MIS covers five working areas:

  • global connectivity and socio-economic participation
  • diversity and social cohesion
  • cross-border movement and citizenship
