In Memorium - Prof.dr. Christiane Timmerman

With great sadness we announce that prof. dr. Christiane Timmerman passed away on 10 February 2019. She was professor at the University of Antwerp and the director of CeMIS. She has been of incredible value to the IMISCOE community, committed to various Standing Committees, and leaves a great legacy to both CeMIS and the migration scholarly community at large. We would like to take the opportunity to wish our Antwerp colleagues all the strength they need for coping with this loss. CeMIS loses its inspiring founder and leading force. We will miss her dearly.

The 16th Annual Conference of IMISCOE will focus on the conceptual and methodological approaches for understanding the growing diversity and complexity of international migration.

Rinus Penninx Best Paper Award changes its procedure this year

The Rinus Penninx best paper award in honour of the founding father of IMISCOE, is an annual award for the best paper submitted to and presented at the IMISCOE annual conference. The award is sponsored by the journal Comparative Migration Studies. An anonymous review committee decides on the allocation of the award. Besides the honour of receiving the award, the prize winner also receives € 750.-- and the opportunity to publish the paper in the journal CMS.

To be eligible for the Rinus Penninx Best Paper Award, please submit your paper before the 26th of June 2019, by uploading your paper via the website or send your paper to the chair of your panel. Chairs can nominate full papers (with a maximum of 1 per session). Please note that chairs can nominate papers until one week after the conference (deadline: 5th of July). Only original, non-published papers are taken into consideration for the prize. When a paper has more than one author, an authorship note should be added in which the role of each author is explained.

In case information on conveners and/or chair is not available in the programming of the conference sessions, the submission will have to be sent to Warda Belabas (belabas@essb.eur.nl).

The winner of the Rinus Penninx Award will be announced on the IMISCOE website, and handed out at the next IMISCOE Spring Conference (February 2020).

Call for special issue proposals: Comparative research and theory-development in migration studies

Comparative Migration Studies (CMS) welcomes proposals for special issues related to the following theme: 

"Comparative research and theory-development in migration studies".

We are looking for articles that push present understandings of migration, integration, and race and ethnic relations in new conceptual, methodological, and empirical, directions. A special issue should include at least 4 original articles, plus an introduction. Proposals should provide an outline of the special issue, provisional titles and author names of contributors (who should have confirmed their participation), and at least 1 complete paper. All articles for CMS should include an abstract of no more than 250 words and observe a word-limit of 9,000 words.

Competitive Call for Book Proposals 2018 - 3 winners

The call was launched at the conference and received significant attention. We prolonged the deadline to 25 October 2018 (instead of 15 October) so as to give some more time to several people who were interested and saw it only after the summer.

We received 14 proposals of which 2 were rejected, 1 was invited for revision but eventually decided not to re-submit, and 11 were approved.

Three winners were selected, and eight more proposals were proposed for acceptance without a prize.

IMISCOE Spring Conference in Liege: 27-28/2 and 1 March, 2019

IMISCOE Spring Conference: "Migration and Social Protection in the European Union: Public Policies, Migrant Practices and the Politics of Welfare" is organized by CEDEM - Université de Liège , Mitsopro.  Keynote speech by Virginie Guiraudon (Sciences Po) on 28/2 at 6PM in Salle Académique of Université de Liège.

IMISCOE Spring Conference in Sheffield: 28-29 March 2019

IMISCOE Spring Conference: "Transforming Mobility and Immobility Brexit and Beyond",  takes places in Sheffield (UK). 

Organised by the Migration Research Group (MRG) at the University of Sheffield in collaboration with the Centre of Migration Research (CMR) at the University of Warsaw and IMISCOE . It is supported by the Noble Foundation’s Programme on Modern Poland. At the very moment the UK plans to exit the EU, we invite migration scholars to come together to discuss how Brexit cannot be understood in isolation, but must be seen in relation to a geographic, temporal and conceptual ‘beyond’. We will collaborate to develop understanding of how on-going events in Europe and worldwide are transforming regimes, patterns and understandings of mobility and immobility.

IMISCOE PhD Summer School, 9-14 June 2019, Istanbul

The theme of the Summer School is "Studying Integration and Social Cohesion - Theory, Practice, Method and Ethics of Conduct" it will take place 9-14 June 2019 in Istanbul, Turkey.
