Cees Jochemsen retired

This summer, IMISCOE said goodbye to Cees Jochemsen, who has been greatly valued as the senior Network Officer of IMISCOE since 2014. After the Rotterdam conference, in which Cees took a leading role, he officially left IMISCOE and is now enjoying his well-deserved retirement (which he had even postponed for the conference!). We want to thank Cees for the wonderful work that he has done for IMISCOE over the last 3,5 years. Cees played a key role within the Network Office and he was a driving force in the expansion and professionalization of IMISCOE in the last few years. On behalf of the whole Network Office and IMISCOE: thank you Cees!

Warda Belabas is replacing Cees Jochemsen as IMISCOE’s fulltime senior network-officer. In the last few years Warda was especially involved in IMISCOE’s Research-Series as the editorial manager, but will now be responsible for all IMISCOE-related affairs.

IMISCOE is not only saying goodbye to Cees Jochemsen, but also to Ali Konyali, who has served as IMISCOE’s webmaster over the last 3 years. We also take this opportunity to thank Ali for the great work that he has done. Ali will be succeeded by Karin Milovanovic-Hanselman, who will now be responsible for all website and newsletter-related affairs.

AWARDS

Maria Baganha Award

The winner of the IMISCOE Maria Ioannis Baganha Dissertation Award 2017 is:

Dr. Yossi Harpaz.

His dissertation entitled “Compensatory Citizenship: A Comparative Study of Dual Nationality in Serbia, Mexico and Israel”, was defended at Princeton University in September 2016.

The award ceremony has taken place during the IMISCOE conference in Rotterdam, on Wednesday June 28th 2017.

Dr. Harpaz’s thesis is an extremely original piece of work which makes a highly innovative shift from the dominant focus on dual citizenship.

Rinus Penninx Award

The winner is René Kreichauf's paper, ‘From Forced Migration to Forced Arrival: The Campisation of Refugee Accommodation Centres in European Cities’.

On June 30, 2017 - the last day of the 14th IMISCOE conference in Rotterdam - the Rinus Penninx Best Paper Award was announced.

Understanding Urban Diversity, or What's the matter with Rotterdam?

On June 28th, keynote speaker Steven Vertovec was invited to open IMISCOE’s 14th Annual Conference, held at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Due to an unfortunate illness his keynote-lecture was canceled. However, given the importance of his speech – both IMISCOE and Steven Vertovec decided to distribute his talk through a video-lecture, filmed at the Max-Planck Institute (attended by his students).

SURVEY

IMISCOE’s annual conference, which took place on 28-30 June 2017 in Rotterdam, has been evaluated by a survey that was sent to all conference-participants. The survey showed that the Rotterdam conference was greatly appreciated by the network, with a very high overall score of a 8,2. In particular the quality of the semi-plenaries, the venue in Rotterdam and its facilities and the local organization of the conference were highly appreciated. However, several points of improvement were indicated as well, especially speaking to the structure of the conference.

This included, for example, the very lack of time for discussion in panels, too many parallel sessions and too limited availibility of uploaded full papers.

This feedback reflects the challenge of developing a conference-format that fits the growth of IMISCOE (about 650 conference participants in Rotterdam!).

In the upcoming months, the coordinators – in close collaboration with the organizers of IMISCOE’s next annual conference in Barcelona – will discuss the options to solve some of these concerns. Thanks to all of you for completing the survey and we hope that this year’s visitors will come back next year for the Barcelona conference!
