Intro

This edition of the IMISCOE PhD Network focuses on the activities organized for the PhDs attending the IMISCOE Annual Conference in Malmo, 26-28 June 2019. All the PhD activities will take place on the morning of June, 26th (breakfast and lunch are provided). Below are the details concerning time and venue, as well as some instructions for participants. Looking forward to meeting you all! And if you cannot join us in Malmo, please have a look at our Blog – see the final part of this Newsletter.

1. PhDs activities at the IMISCOE Annual Conference in Malmo

The PhD Network will hold its Assembly between 8.30 and 9.00 (Niagara building, room A0306). It is open to anyone who wishes to know how the PhD Network functions and possibly wants to get involved. We will also announce important developments concerning the involvement of PhDs in the future research infrastructure of IMISCOE! Please do come, even if you have never heard of the PhD Network before and it is the first time you come to an IMISCOE Conference.

After the Assembly, there will be four Training and Networking activities:

  • “PREPARING AN EFFECTIVE ABSTRACT FOR A CONFERENCE”, Niagara building, room A0306, 09.00 - 10.30 - Those who will participate are kindly required to bring with them abstracts they prepared for conferences, especially rejected ones, together with the Calls of those Conferences, so that it will be easier and more fruitful to get hands-on and practise the art of abstract-writing. Speakers will be Inka Stock (Universität Bielefeld) and Lorenzo Piccoli (University of Neuchatel).

  • INTERGENERATIONAL FEEDBACK SESSION, Niagara building, room A0307, 09.00 - 10.30 - PhDs will have the chance to receive personalized feedback on their research and their possible career path from senior researchers in small group discussions.

  • “TEACHING CONTROVERSIAL MIGRATION AND INTEGRATION ISSUES”, Niagara building, room A0306, 10.45 - 12.15 – We will exchange with Johanna Neuhauser, Osnabrück University, about the challenges involved in teaching migration and integration-related issues in increasingly diverse classes, by sharing experiences and resources: take this workshop as a space for interactive discussion and reflection on attitudes and pedagogical practices.

  • “HOW TO GET RESEARCH FUNDING”, Niagara building, room A0307,10.45-12.15 – Don’t hesitate to ask questions about complex application processes to Nando Sigona (University of Birmingham), who will be our speaker. Please note that Dr. Sigona will join us at 11.00am, due to the landing time of his flight. The workshop may continue until 12.30am, so as to allow enough time for a Q&A session.

Find more details about the PhD activities on the Conference Portal on this page. Please note that registration for all activities is now closed.

And on the evening of June, 26th, we’ll meet for having a drink all together and get to know each other!

2. PhD Network’s Blog

Don’t miss the latest posts of our Blog, concerning the invisible patterns of power in academia, how to get to the PhD defense, and migration as portrayed in movies! Interested in writing for the IMISCOE PhD Blog yourself? Please feel welcome to contribute! You can think of pieces that present your findings, pieces in which you take part in a wider discussion on migration related topics, complain about or cherish your life as a migration PhD researcher or interview someone you find interesting on a migration related theme. Be creative, write it up in blog style in 800 words, and send it to: imiscoephdblog@gmail.com. An editor will get in touch as soon as possible.
