Saara Koikkalainen (D.Soc.Sc) is a University researcher working at the University of Lapland. Her doctoral dissertation in sociology focused on the labour market experiences of highly-skilled Finns in the other EU member states. She has also studied and published articles about migrant integration in Finland, identity and migration, conditional cash transfer programmes in New York City, recruitment processes of wilderness safari guides in Finnish Lapland and mental time travel processes in migration decision-making, or so-called cognitive migration. She has been on research exchange at University of California, Davis (Fulbright grant 2010) and at European University Institute (Florence, Italy 2012). She is a member of the On a journey through time and place –project (2016-2018, Kone Foundation) which focuses on the effects of the asylum seeker crisis in Northern Finland.
