Workshop: Migration, Migrant Workers and Labour Markets in Europe

The Research Group Immigration, Immigrants and Trade Unions in Europe (IITUE) finished its major four year project in December 2017 with the book Trade Unions and Migrant Workers: New Contexts and Challenges in Europe, published by Edward Elgar and the ILO.
In 2017, the Research Group was also promoted to the status of Standing Committee.
These two events led to a redefinition and broadening of the research field to Immigration, Immigrants and Labour Markets in Europe (IILME). This renewed focus brings important actors in the picture, alongside migrant workers and trade unions: governments and institutional bodies that regulate access to labour markets, set the legal framework for work and employment and control the implementation of regulations (e.g. inspectorates); employers and their organisations which have an important regulatory role, together with trade unions; but also agencies and intermediaries, including subcontractors and recruitment agencies that facilitate the match between labour demand and supply (but, in some cases, may also contribute to circumvent regulations). Attitudes and strategies of all these actors supposedly shape migrant workers’ recruitment paths and their position in – for them – new labour markets. Scrutinising the role of these regulatory actors and the mechanisms involved in their interaction will also bring to light how they might work differently – and sometimes against each other - at the local level (within workplaces), at the sectoral, national and international levels. As to the latter, the process of European integration as a political, economic and social entity and the consequences thereof for regulatory systems at lower levels as well as for the creation of an “European labour market” may be important issues for study.
IILME/IITUE calls for papers and contributions from different disciplines such as migration, industrial relations and labour market studies. Furthermore, the SC welcomes proposals for collaborations within IILME/IITUE on specific issues in this research domain. Such proposals might include: research projects for cross-national comparative research, a thematic issue for a journal or a book, or any other research or publication activity that aims at promoting collaborations between Industrial Relations, Migration and Labour market scholars. Researchers (including non-members of the IITUE) are invited to discuss such ideas during a specific workshop session at the conference. Please send any expression of interests to the coordinators.
