Migrant Regularization: Processes, Pathways, and Mechanisms linking Status to Citizenship

IMISCOE’s Standing Committee on Migration, Citizenship and Political Participation convenes scholars from all world regions to this workshop. We will delve into various aspects of the topic, including the overarching theme of the liminality of citizenship and legal status, with a broad empirical and theoretical range, fostering connections among researchers from different subfields within the social sciences and humanities across the Global North and South.
We encourage submissions on, including, but not limited to the following:
1. Comparative analyses and case-studies at the aggregate or individual level linking pathways from migrant status to citizenship (e.g. the relationship between regularization and access to citizenship or nationality via naturalization, or the exercise of citizen rights);
2. analyses of citizenship laws and policies facilitating regularization at the subnational, regional, national, and supranational levels;
3. regularization and naturalization processes facilitating or hindering international mobility;
4. historical, law, political economy, politics and policy macro perspectives on regularization;
5. bottom-up (individual-level) or top-down (state-level) practices;
6. meso and micro perspectives focusing on migrant experience living on the edges of legal status and pathways to obtaining legal status and/or nationality.
The organizers will encourage research collaborations among the participants and strive to publish a selection of the presented papers in a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal or edited volume.
To submit your paper proposal, please upload an abstract of max. 300 words along with a short biographic note (250 words) on the author(s) until March 10th, 2024 here: https://forms.gle/ovHnnVPgudcFvWq16. We will acknowledge receipt of the proposals on that date. We will inform about the result of the selection by April 4th, 2024.
There is no conference registration fee**. Participants will be expected to fund their own travel and stay in Mexico City. In-person participation is encouraged. Hence, a limited number of bursaries will be available to support attendance for early career scholars, especially from the Global South. If you would like to apply for this, please state so and prove justification for it in your application form. Also, in the event that you intend to participate online only, let us know in the moment of application.
