IMISCOE Bulletin #8

Welcome to the 8th edition of the IMISCOE Bulletin

22 March 2024

This edition of the IMISCOE Bulletin is released right before the 2024 IMISCOE Spring Conference hosted by the Migration Research Center at Koç University.

Welcome to the 8th edition of the IMISCOE Bulletin! This issue is released right before the opening of our 2024 IMISCOE Spring Conference hosted by MiReKoç at Koç University in Istanbul.

The Bulletin is one of the main communication channels of IMISCOE with its 68 Member Institutes, the individual members of the Network, and the wider community interested in its activities. The Bulletin is built around contributions from the IMISCOE External Affairs Committee (EAC) and the Network Office based at the Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM) of the University of Liège.

Since the last Bulletin in the Summer of 2023, IMISCOE has continued to expand its horizons. Among several other recent achievements, we have had the immense pleasure to see our new Standing Committee Race, Racism and Discrimination (RACED) start its work, the whole IMISCOE community warmly welcoming the first Member Institute in Latin America (Casa Grande University, Ecuador), the highly-regarded IMISCOE book series continuing to publish manuscripts of exceptional academic standards, and the incredibly active PhD Network and PhD Academy continuing to expand and be the reference when it comes to supporting young scholars in the field of migration studies.

We therefore took the opportunity offered by this edition of the Bulletin to showcase all these important achievements. We interviewed Patrick Simon and Sayaka Osanami Törngren about the objectives and activity plans of the newly created SC RACED. We also had a chat with Ingrid Ríos and Sebastián Umpierrez de Reguero to discuss about the ongoing migration research and future plans in IMISCOE of Casa Grande University. Agnese Pacciardi, Billie Martiniello and Mateusz Krawczyck guided us through the recent activities of the IMISCOE PhD Network around the theme of questioning the unquestionable. We also interviewed Thais França who explained how the IMISCOE PhD Academy empowers PhD students, catering to their career development needs. Furthermore, Anna Triandafyllidou shared with us updates from the IMISCOE’s book series, which includes invaluable contributions on diverse facets of international migration.

We also sat down with Ahmet İçduygu to discuss about the upcoming IMISCOE Spring Conference in Istanbul, as well the important topic selected by MiReKoç for this event: “Mobilities and immobilities in an era of polycrisis”. Moreover, this Bulletin includes an editorial by Jan Willem Duyvendak, who invites us to incorporate into the migration research agenda a critical reflection on nativism and on political reactions to liberalism.

On behalf of IMISCOE’s Network Office and External Affairs Committee, we would like to thank all of the contributors of this edition of the Bulletin. We also want to take this opportunity to thank all Standing and Executive Committees, as well as all individual and institutional members of the Network, for the active engagement throughout the year. We are very grateful to all of you, for your contribution and support to the incredibly rich activities of IMISCOE.

We wish you a pleasant read and invite you to share this Bulletin widely to help us spread the word about the IMISCOE community.
