On behalf of the Organising Committee, we are delighted to welcome colleagues to the 23rd IMISCOE Annual Conference, to be held in Girona from 29 June to 2 July 2026.
Under the theme “Strengthening Migration Studies through Community Engagement”, this year’s conference invites participants to reflect critically on how migration research can be more deeply connected to the communities, places, and social actors with whom we engage as scholars. Moving beyond purely academic or Western-centric perspectives, the conference seeks to foster dialogue between research, lived experience, and public debate, highlighting participatory, collaborative, and reflexive approaches to the production of knowledge on migration.
By foregrounding community engagement, co-production, and socially embedded research practices, the conference aims to explore how migration studies can contribute to social justice, democratic participation, and inclusive public discourse. Particular attention will be paid to the intersections between critical migration studies, community-based knowledge, and the social and political implications of engaged research.
Hosted in Girona—a medium-sized city with a strong commitment to social cohesion, civic participation, and academic–community collaboration—the conference offers a unique setting to strengthen exchanges between scholars, civil society actors, artists, practitioners, and policymakers. We look forward to welcoming IMISCOE colleagues and partners to Girona for what promises to be a stimulating and inclusive space for collective reflection and engagement.
