The Standing Committee on Forced Migration and Refugees (SC-FMR) proposes the following panel for the 2027 IMISCOE Annual Conference in Brussels: “Deportations as Forced Migration”, coordinated by Eveliina Lyytinen, Marta Jaroszewicz & Zeynep Yanaşmayan. In the SC on FMR, forced migration and refugees are defined in an inclusive sense, covering a wide range of types of movements as well as immobility, including that of coerced return and deportations.
With the annual conference theme of human rights and global equity in mind, our key topics to discuss in this panel include (but are not limited to):
• How can deportations be analysed from human rights and global equity perspectives?
• Conceptually, what are useful ways to consider deportations as forms of forced migration?
• Which methods and ethical considerations are key in human rights-centred deportation scholarship?
• How is the current expansion of deportation and return policies, including new EU legislation and the externalisation of asylum processing, reshaping forced migration?
