In the past decade, institutions of education across Europe and North America have received increasing critique regarding the persistence of racial injustice in their policies and norms. The debates have particularly drawn attention to the academic, social, and psychological impact of ongoing systemic inequities and discrimination against students of colour at all levels of education. To unpack these racial inequities in schools, scholars have documented how the belonging and achievement levels of students from diverse and marginalised backgrounds are affected by various school policies and practices -such as colour-blindness, assimilationism, and lack of intersectionality - hostile racial climate, microaggressions by peers, teacher bias and expectations, underrepresentation of teachers of colour and administrative staff, and lack of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching. While each one of these factors plays a part in reproducing racism, findings specifically emphasize the key role of teacher’s commitment in challenging racist norms, policies, and structures that negatively affect the experiences of students of colour. This webinar brings together two scholars from both sides of the Atlantic, Orhan Agirdag and Rita Kohli, to discuss their work on the role of teachers (of colour) in systemic change and, in particular, the potential of anti-racist teaching practices and methods as a tool for achieving racial equity in education.
