In view of the 23rd IMISCOE Annual Conference (29 June – 2 July 2026, Girona & online) on “Strengthening Migration Studies through Community Engagement”, we invite submissions for our panel on "Art and Culture as Catalysts for Social Inclusion: Engaging Migrant and Ethnic Communities".
Panel Convenor: Dr. Nilay Kılınç, University of Helsinki (
Submission deadline: 15 September 2025
Panel abstract: Arts and culture can do more than entertain – they can transform. This panel explores how cultural engagement fosters social inclusion, empowerment, and civic participation for migrant and ethnic communities. Drawing on Stern & Seifert’s (2010) framework of arts-based social inclusion, we examine how arts initiatives generate social capital, expand capabilities, and create spaces of belonging and recognition. Arts-based interventions may include cultural space development, community organizing, institutional partnerships, school programs, and culturally sensitive services.
We welcome contributions that are participatory, community-engaged, and socially conscious, addressing questions such as:
1. How do arts-based initiatives promote inclusion, identity, and agency among migrant communities?
2. What innovative artistic practices, digital media, or participatory approaches enhance social and cultural impact?
3. How can research and practice co-create knowledge while avoiding exclusion, commodification, or cultural hierarchies?
4. What ethical and political challenges arise when collaborating with artists, NGOs, or community organizations?
In line with the conference theme, this panel seeks to foster interdisciplinary dialogue across regions and artistic practices, emphasizing co-created, place-based responses to the social and cultural challenges faced by migrant and ethnic communities.
