Position Summary
The UCC-based international project “The Orders and Borders of Global Inequality: Migration and Mobilities in Late Capitalism”, funded by the prestigious EU Horizon European Research Council Advanced Grant scheme, is looking to employ a Post-Doctoral Researcher with a social sciences specialism in contemporary Chinese migration and mobilities, and a fluent spoken and written ability in Chinese.
The researcher, who will have completed a PhD in a field close to the project and have relevant language abilities, will work directly with the PI Adrian Favell on a specific study of Chinese migrants living and working in Japan and Korea. The study will use interviewing, as well as other methods and require some fieldwork based in these two countries.
This self-contained two year project, is part of a larger programme of research that aims to make a groundbreaking contribution to migration theory and data. The ERC project “The Orders and Borders of Global Inequality” will look at the modes in which inequalities between countries and citizens relate to the classification of international migration and cross-border mobilities, from asylum seeking and labour migration, to tourism and temporary travel. Based at UCC in Ireland, the five year project has partners located in the UK (University of Leeds), Italy (European University Institute, Florence), Tokyo (Waseda University) and Argentina (Universidad de Buenos Aires). Using a variety of social science methods, It will build a large scale quantitative and legal database, as well as engage in a number of qualitative ethnographic studies of different populations around the world.
The role will be based at the Radical Humanities Laboratory, Wandesford Quay. In addition, the Researcher will be expected to be involved in activities associated with the research cluster in Migration and Integration, and take on organisational tasks where appropriate.
As a key member of the research team, the role will also involve assisting the PI in the management and implementation of the project, coordinating with partners, and planning research outputs. A particular feature of the role will be the chance to collaborate with an international network of other post-docs and PhDs doing related projects. Some national and international travel related to the role is expected as part of the research.
Post Duration: 24 months
Salary: €42,031 - €48,427 p.a. (IUA PD1 Salary Scale)
