This paper examines the passing of the Aliens Acts from the period 1905-1925. It considers why the state built up such a critical anti-migrant infrastructure during the period. It does so by examining migrant communities, different forms of racism that were emerging and in large part the foundations of the acts, and the role of the state. It also uses local case studies from Lancashire as a lens to view the impact of the Acts at a regional level. For example, it will examine the role of welfare chauvinism, in particular looking at mental health hospitals and the position of international patients.
