The diversity between and within ethnic minority groups in Northwestern Europe or the United States is becoming more and more visible. Critical perspectives argue we cannot treat ethnic groups as fixed entities which develop at the group level over time in a linear way, e.g. as for instance is stated in the new and segmented assimilation literature. Consequently, we cannot approach members of the same ethnic background homogenously in terms of their values, culture repertoire, skills, opportunities or identity. We advocate for a more dynamic understanding of ethnic groups in which for instance within group differences can potentially result in divergent outcomes across different domains.

By moving away from the ethnic group as primary unit of analysis we can potentially open up new explanations in the field of migration and ethnic studies. This approach asks for a new theoretical perspective which sheds more light on the interplay between ethnicity and other cross-cutting dimensions. Approaches that supersede above and beyond single forms of diversity.

Within this session, we invite papers that illustrate how by changing the unit of analysis new perspectives of immigrant incorporation can be realized.
Papers may focus, but are not limited to:

  • Papers that address axes of differences beyond the ethnic lens that provide new perspectives on immigrant incorporation.
  • Papers that focus and explain within group differences and divergent outcomes.
  • Theoretical papers that discuss the above described themes.

This session welcomes in papers inspired by, but not limited to the former questions. Please send an abstract with max. 250 words by January 10th 2015 to:
