Migration scholarship has long approached migrant men mainly through their labour, zooming in on socioeconomic status, skill level and employment trajectories. As a result, much of their emotional lives remains underexplored, including how they build and sustain friendships, rework intimacy and family life, navigate care responsibilities and manage the emotional labour of mobility. This reflects a wider bias in gender and migration studies, where women are readily studied through care and emotion, while men remain tied to economic and productive registers.
 
This dialogue brings together two research trajectories to address that imbalance. Mastoureh Fathi will discuss migrant men’s emotions to non-human elements, focusing on how emotions attach to places and objects. Francesco Cerchiaro will discuss migrant men and intimacy, focusing on emotions in families and relationships. Together we ask what is specific about emotions as they are gendered in migration, and how to make sense of men as emotional subjects of migration.
