Beyond Objectivity: Reflexivity and Positionality in Migration Research
This workshop brings together researchers working on migration to reflect on the role of positionality and reflexivity in the research process. It will provide an opportunity to think critically about how researchers’ own positions shape the questions they ask, the relationships they develop in the field, and the knowledge they produce.
Date and time: 5 November, 16:00–17:00 WET | 17:00–18:00 CET
Venue: Online via Zoom
About the workshop
Research on migration is shaped by the perspectives and experiences of those who conduct it. Factors such as gender, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, disciplinary background, and relationships to the communities studied can influence every stage of the research process.
The workshop will bring together Olena Fedyuk and Satrio Nindyo Istiko to explore the question: How does who we are as researchers shape our research? The speakers will reflect on the ethical dimensions of positionality and reflexivity in migration research, discussing how researchers navigate insider and outsider positions, power dynamics, and the relationship between subjectivity and knowledge production.
