The Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS) is searching for an Editor for the International Migration Review (IMR) to begin work as soon as possible, but preferably no later than June 2022. CMS invites letters of interest from leading scholars in the field, including those working with migration study centers in universities or think tanks. It also welcomes letters of interest from co-editors, with a preference for at least one editor located in the United States. The editor(s) may work from their own offices or CMS’s New York City office.

Founded in 1964, IMR, CMS’s signature publication, is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal created to encourage and facilitate the study of all aspects of sociodemographic, historical, economic, political, legislative, spatial, social, and cultural aspects of human mobility. It is regarded as the principal journal in the field facilitating the study of human migration, ethnic group relations, and refugee movements. Through an interdisciplinary and methodologically diverse approach and from an international perspective, IMR provides the single most comprehensive forum devoted exclusively to the analysis and review of international population movements. It seeks rigorous manuscripts that speak to issues of relevance across the social sciences and to wider policy and societal debates concerning international migration, as well as manuscripts that push existing understandings of international migration in new methodological, empirical, and conceptual directions.
The IMR Editor position is a part-time position, which has required roughly 50 percent of recent editors’ time. The position includes compensation, albeit not likely full compensation. The Editor relies on an expert advisory group of leading scholars in the field and a team of associate editors. CMS’s Publications and Events Manager handles the logistical aspects of submission, evaluation, peer review, and publication on a quarterly basis, and interfaces with IMR’s publisher, SAGE Publishing, on production and other issues. CMS’s Communications Manager helps to publicize and market IMR’s work. The IMR Editor reports to CMS’s Executive Director, but enjoys editorial independence and responsibility related to content and publication of the journal.
Responsibilities
- Oversee – in coordination with associate editors – the process of initial review, peer review, editing, and final decisions on the journal’s high volume of submissions
- Communicate with authors and peer reviewers regarding manuscripts
- Select and organize content for each issue of IMR
- Actively seek out and encourage the submission of quality manuscripts and relevant materials to the journal
- Ensure that IMR publishes scholarship that reflects the highest standards of research, addresses significant new knowledge relevant to international migration and international migration policy, and communicates a corpus of research that is geographically and demographically inclusive of the topics in the international migration field and of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and analytic approaches to those topics
- Recruit IMR associate editors and establish an appropriate division-of-labor with them
- Work with CMS’s Publications and Events Manager to ensure the effective, efficient, and timely issuance of the journal
- Consult with the editorial advisory board of IMR at least twice a year on the journal’s direction, issues and scholarship that deserve coverage, promotion of the journal, and other matters
- Plan, convene, and follow-up on consultations with the editorial advisory board
- Make recommendations to CMS's ED regarding potential new and the continued service of existing members of the editorial advisory board
- Attend professional gatherings, meetings, networks, and activities to enhance, advance, and market the journal
- Maintain and enhance the standing and influence of IMR as the principal journal for scholarship devoted to the analysis and review of international population movements and migration from a global perspective
- Participate in the broader intellectual life of CMS through moderating events (including at CMS’ annual academic and policy symposium) and otherwise inter-facing with CMS program staff
- Select IMR articles from each edition to publicize; review and edit IMR article summaries for marketing purposes; select IMR authors and articles to promote more broadly, including through social media and events
- Undertake, at the request of CMS’s ED, other relevant duties and tasks relating to the IMR
Professional Requirements
Advanced university degree; relevant professional and research experience; effective written and verbal communication skills; administrative experience; recognized standing in the field of international migration; familiarity with the scholarly publishing industry; committed to publishing articles that are geographically and demographically inclusive of the topics in the international migration field; familiar with cutting- edge disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and analytic approaches to those topics. The IMR Editor should also be willing to contribute to the broader intellectual life of CMS.
