Return takes place in a transnational social space. To fulfill this perspective, a concept for sustainable return and reintegration must be further developed. The PRIM (“Project Migrants Interested in Return”) study uses the lifeworld approach to shed light on the needs, vulnerabilities and support of refugees from the 13 countries of origin of the programme of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) “Returning to New Opportunities” in Germany.
It highlights how the issue of return is being dealt with and what ideas of return are expressed by the interviewees. In addition, the study gives insight on the awareness and use of support services and how the target group copes with everyday life and plans return. Finally recommendations for action are formulated for return policy actors and for the programme itself, from a social work perspective.
The study was commissioned by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to the Department of Educational Science of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). It is settled in the field of the special interest group “Transnational Social Work” (TRANSOW) of ESWRA.
