As the IMISCOE PhD Network continues its journey of reflection, we are excited to share the activities we have prepared for the 22nd IMISCOE Annual Conference in Aubervilliers-Paris this July. Building on our ongoing focus on joy in academia, this year’s PhD sessions will highlight how joy and purpose emerge throughout the PhD journey.
We will open the PhD programme with a panel discussion entitled ‘Finding joy in the PhD journey’, following the fil rouge of last year's discussions on overcoming challenges and failure. This time, we shift the focus to the positive motivations that drive people to undertake doctoral research, asking the central question: “How does doing a PhD bring you happiness?” Three scholars—each at different stages of their academic careers—will share their reflections: Ismail Oubad (University of Liège / University of Genoa); Carolin Schütze (Malmö University); and Swantje Falcke (Utrecht University). This panel will not only showcase diverse academic pathways but will also create space for a broader, collaborative conversation on the meaning of happiness in research.
Complementing the panel, we are hosting two interactive workshops under the shared title “Exploring PhD’s Experiences: What Brings You Joy Within Your PhD Journey?”—one online and one on-site. These workshops offer a safe and welcoming space for PhD candidates to reflect on the aspects of academic life that shape well-being and joy, including work-life balance, milestones and achievements, and relationships with supervisors and peers.
This year’s conference also marks an important transition within the PhD Network Board. After two years of inspiring and dedicated leadership, Billie Martiniello is stepping down as PhD Chair. Billie’s contribution has been central to the identity of the network—from creating space to discuss difficult topics like failure and mental health, to championing more joyful and compassionate approaches to academia. We are deeply grateful for her thoughtful leadership and creative spirit. We are equally pleased to announce that Yowali Kabamba will take on the role of PhD Chair for the academic year 2025–2026. Yowali brings fresh perspectives and a deep sense of commitment, and we are confident she will guide the network with enthusiasm. With new leadership and a renewed focus on joy, we look forward to continuing to build an inclusive, reflective, and collaborative PhD community. We invite all PhD candidates—whether joining us online or in person—to be part of this journey.
