The differential educational outcomes of students of ethnic/racial minority or immigrant background and their ‘majority’ counterparts have been extensively documented. Research often focuses on students’ cultural and social capital, cultural background or the social class status of their parents in explaining such differences. However, increasingly studies also show the role of racism and discrimination in educational institutions and policies leading to educational inequalities and impacting on minority students’ sense of belonging and well-being.
Particularly critical methodologies and theoretical approaches (e.g. critical race theory, intersectional approaches, decolonial and postcolonial theories) emphasize that we have to rethink our approach to understanding ongoing inequalities in education. They highlight the role of structural power inequities, prevailing norms and institutional structures and processes. In addition, the legacy of colonialism is being interrogated by scholars to understand its impact on our current state of knowledge and learning practices and to call for epistemic justice. Also, such methodologies aim at redressing inequities and discrimination in education by centralizing the lived experiences and experiential knowledge of marginalized individuals.
This workshop seeks to bring together researchers working or planning to work on issues of racism in education. We aim to exchange about research ideas and lacuna and inspire collaboration that may lead to joint activities (e.g. research proposals, publication projects).
We invite researchers of all stages to participate that are interested in the following or related topics:
- institutional policies, practices and standards (re-)producing inequalities and discrimination against ethnic or racial minorities in educational institutions (e.g., curricula, representation, pedagogical approaches, teacher attitudes, assessment, punishment systems)
- students’ coping and resistance strategies in response to racism and discrimination in education
- parenting practices in confronting, denouncing or dealing with racism in education
- decolonizing practices
- intersection of “race” with other categories of differentiation, e.g. gender, class, and sexuality in mechanisms of racism in educational institutions
- critical methodologies and theoretical approaches that enhance our understanding of structural inequities and discrimination in education, e.g. critical race theory, decolonial and postcolonial approaches
- comparative approaches
- Strategies and good practice to tackle institutional racism and discriminatory practices
