REMESO Graduate School - courses, Autumn 2014

REMESO Graduate School - Linköping University, Sweden
Courses for Swedish and International PhD and MA Students:
Autumn 2014

1. Theories of Ethnicity and Nationalism: Historical and Contemporary Debates

13 October – 14 November 2014. On-campus week, 27–31 October.
Course Directors: Associate Professor Peo Hansen, REMESO and Professor Stefan Jonsson, REMESO. Guest Lecturer: Anders Stephanson Professor Columbia University.

This course examines key ideas and concepts underlying both historical and contemporary thinking on ethnicity and nationalism, including questions of national and ethnic identification, solidarity and mobilization, as well as theories on multiculturalism and citizenship. Students also explore recent debates on supranationalism, cosmopolitanism and the postnational. Emphasis is put on the ways in which nation and ethnicity need to be re-thought and re-historicized when confronted with issues of coloniality, postcoloniality, gender and sexuality. Questions of methodology are highlighted, addressing in particular methodological nationalism and Eurocentrism, as well as other forms of tacit methodological assumptions that have influenced research. In this way, the course also aims to strenghten students’ ability to carry out empirical research.

2. Citizenship, Ethnic Division and Social Exclusion: National and Postnational Perspectives

17 November – 19 December 2014. On-campus week, 1-5 December
Course Directors: Associate Professors Magnus Dahlstedt and Anders Neergaard Guest Lecturers: TBA

This course aims to engage students in exploring and critically analysing perspectives on citizenship, the interrelations between citizenship and migration, and different models of citizenship—post-national, cosmopolitan, trans-national, etc.—beyond and below the level of the nation-state. Different conceptions of citizenship are examined in their practical translations with regard to ethnic and social exclusion/inclusion in policy making, legal frameworks and institutions. As the analysis of citizenship must go beyond the nation-state framework, the course takes a closer look at EU-led initiatives designed to combat discrimination and ethnic and social exclusion.
